Walking in the Fields of Hope (走在希望的田野上)

Watch excerpt13:19

The work

The work asks how a life can find its place in a vast world. With a settled heart, open wilderness becomes home ground; as the outline puts it, we are always walking in the fields of hope.

Creative outline

Between a prologue and an epilogue, the outline for the work moves through three chapters, each named by a single character.

  1. Chapter 1 of 3

    Plainness (平)

A state of mind that is pure, simple and clean. Curious about an unknown world, the young want to leave the greenhouse and be free; youth is impulse, rebellion and fervour, careless of consequence and eager to be recognised.

First love arrives shy and sincere, holding nothing back. Small in a large and complicated world, the young try to speak with it, to prove themselves and to grow up quickly, pressing on towards the fields of hope.

  2. Chapter 2 of 3

    Edges (棱)

When faith turns into desire, worldly edges bury what was there at the beginning: excess, deceit and mistrust.

Caught in that tide without knowing it, people meet the chapter’s question: is an edge a weapon to attack with, or a shield to protect oneself?

  3. Chapter 3 of 3

    Roundness (圆)

Simplicity rests within complexity, and stillness comes away from glamour. After the noise of the world, people return by a winding path to where they began; taking the curve as the straight way is not weakness but wisdom.

With a mind matured beyond the everyday, the chapter looks back on plainness and edges alike, and finds composure and calm in having passed through both.
